Baseball Superstar Bryce Harper Helps Teenager Get Prom Date

Imagine you are a teenage boy and you want a memorable way to ask the girl you like out to prom. What would you do? Write a song and sing it outside her window? Create a giant poster? Forget all that. Jake Portella, a student at Haddonfield Memorial High School in Haddonfield, New Jersey, got Philadelphia Phill superstar Bryce Harper, a two-time National League MVP, to ask his prospective date for him. She said yes.

Portella knew that his prospective date, Giulia Leonetti, was a big Philadelphia Phillies fan and that several Phillies lived in town. When he showed up at Harper’s door and asked if he would help him regarding the prom, which was coming up quickly, at first Harper took Portella’s email address. Then the first baseman, outfielder, and designated hitter for the Phillies, and formerly of the Washington Nationals said right then would be a good time to help.

The girl said yes, before hugging first Harper, then Portella.

Harper, a first baseman, outfielder, and designated hitter for the Phillies, who previously played for the Washington Nationals, went with Portella to Leonetti’s house and asked her to the prom on his behalf. He said of Portella, “I thought I’d help him out. So will you go to prom with him?”

Leonetti later told mlb.com she freaked out seeing Harper at her door.

A prom is an event people often remember for years. This couple might have a special reason to remember theirs.
